Tertiary Treatment of Sewerage effluent A six year series of results for AFM in the tertiary treatment of sewage effluent. The system in questions was a fixed film biofilter followed by a humus tank and AFM filtration. The back-wash water from the AFM filter was recycled back to the beginning of the works. Prior to AFM system being commissioned, the performance of the WTW was unstable and un-predictable. After commissioning of the system, the effluent water quality stabilized. The BOD was nearly always under 20 mg/l and the suspended solids averaged under 5mg/l.
The above graph represent results over a 6 year period before and after the start up of an AFM filter used for the tertiary treatment of sewerage effluent. The data is taken from a full scale system as shown below. The sewerage works was frequently failing the required environmental standards before the installation of the AFM filter. After the AFM installation, the treatment works has achieved 100% compliance.
