Using AFM in you sand filters will dramatically improve the water quality and clarity.  The turbidity will probably be reduced by 50% and visibility doubled.  50% less back-wash water will be used,  we can even recycle this water to minimise the loss of salt from the system

AFM when used in a simple pressure or rapid gravity filter will give a much better performance than any sand filter when used for effluent treatment. AFM will remove at least 50% more waste from the water than a sand. A simple AFM filter will also perform better than and moving bed sand filter and is around 1/10th of the cost.

AFM   protects the membranes and any pre filtration system such as cartridges. The AFM filter can is some cases reduce the solids loading and bacterial fouling by an order of magnitude, which represents huge savings in membranes and pre-filters .

AFM has a much higher thermal stability than silica sand, it will also remove at least 30% more solids from the water. AFM does not support bacteria,  indeed sand can support  a 1000 times the number of bacteria.  The use of AFM can therefore make a major impact on the quality of the water and the level of bacteria in the recycled water.
